Stresa, the elegant internationally famous holiday resort, offers a unique variety and multiplicity of excursion possibilities: it is possible to visit Isola Bella, Isola Pescatori and Isola Madre; Villa Pallavicino, Villa Taranto, the Alpinia Botanical Garden; Lago d’Orta, Mottarone and the ski resort of Macugnaga; the ancien monastery of Santa Caterina del Sasso, the Centovalli, not to mention Milan, capital of fashion and window shopping.
Stresa is located near Milan’s international airports: Malpensa (35 km) and Linate (110 km).
How to reach Stresa:
FROM MILAN TO STRESA
(1h20m, 90 km). Take the A8 motorway towards Laghi-Sesto Calende-Varese, then the A26 motorway towards Gravellona Toce to the Carpugnino exit. In Carpugnino follow the signs for Stresa.
On the train*
(1h-1h30m, 5-14 €). From the two stations of Milan, there are 21 daily trains with stops in Stresa. From Milan Porta Garibaldi, take one of the 10 regional trains to Domossola (1h30m, € 5). From Milan Central take one of 6 regional trains to Domodossola (1h10m, € 5) or one of the 5 international trains to Geneva / Basel ** (55m, € 14).
(1h15m). From Lampugnano Metro Station there are 2 daily buses to Stresa.
FROM MILAN AIRPORTS TO STRESA
Stresa is located 45 km from Milan Malpensa (MXP), 110 km from Milan Linate (LIN) and 130 km from Milan Bergamo (BGY).
FROM MILAN MALPENSA TO STRESA
On the train*
(1h30m, 4 €). There are 8 daily connections available with Stresa, but an intermediate change is required. From Terminal 1 of the airport take the Malpensa Express train and get off at Busto Arsizio RFI *** stop. Then take the train to Domodossola.
(50m, 50km). Follow the signs for the A26 Genova – Gravellona Toce motorway. Take the A26 motorway towards Gravellona Toce. Keep to the Gravellona Toce direction until the Carpugnino exit. In Carpugnino follow the signs for Stresa.
(50m, 100-150 €). The price varies depending on the day and time.
(50m, € 9). From April to September take the Alibus shuttle to Stresa. The service has scheduled times (6 trips a day), but must be booked the day before.
FROM MILAN LINATE TO STRESA
Take the shuttle to Milano Centrale (25m, € 4) and continue by train.
FROM MILAN ORIO TO SERIOUS TO STRESA
Take the shuttle to Milano Centrale (1h, 10 €) and continue by train.
FROM SWITZERLAND TO STRESA
Enter Italy through Brig-Sempione or Gottardo-Locarno. From Brig (1h30m, 100km) continue to Milan, take the A26 motorway and exit at Baveno-Stresa. From Locarno (1h10m, 55km) continue to Cannobio, then Verbania and finally Stresa.
* Tickets must be purchased and validated before boarding the train. There are no discounts for early purchase or for return tickets. In Stresa the station is located near the lakeside and the center (5 minutes on foot).
** Some international trains to Switzerland do not make stops in Stresa: check before departure. Reservations are required for international trains.
*** Warning: do not get off at Busto Arsizio (2nd stop), but at Busto Arsizio RFI (3rd stop).
